I'm not published yet, so I don't know anything about royalties or how it affects someone who is published.
But, as a *cross my fingers" future published writer, I'd really love to see my name on a book spine, and all my hard work poured into a comfy paperback that people can carry with them to work, spill coffee on it, dog-ear a page and all that other good stuff that comes along with having an actual book. And, as Kelly up above there said, "Nothing smells quite like a paper book."

RT Bookreviews actually did a poll on this in their August issue. 74% of the poll takers preferred mass-market paperbacks, and only 10% liked the format of e-books. And, personally, I hope it stays that way. E-books are a nice concept and it might have even encouraged some to read more because of the convienence of having any book at your finger tips. But, I hope it doesn't become our only source of reading material.P. My other novels are hardback - i.e. expensive - so I'm hoping my reader base will enjoy the much cheaper e-book. With technology improving on an almost daily basis, people can now get free e-reader apps for their iPads, iPhones, PCs, laptops, etc. which is good.

Piracy, of course, is a huge problem though.

Another point is that, in the UK at least, the independent bookstores have mostly vanished. I think that was more to do with the big boys like Amazon and The Book Depository than the arrival of e-books. Here, we can only get the best sellers from our bookstores.

It's a thorny subject and I suppose only time will tell.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05938431508430656253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1502649016629224182.post-54564587672576309552010-08-28T21:09:13.615-05:002010-08-28T21:09:13.615-05:00Nothing smells quite like a paper book. I can't speak on royalties because I don't have enough under my belt to tell you if I'm selling. But just offering a book as an e-read, we are cutting out a huge chunk of readers. Like everyone I'm related to and work with and basically every person I know. I was totally psyched about have a print book even if the print run was 1000. Vanity. I wanted to put it on my shelf, sign it, look at it.

And with that said, I'm reading Fire at Midnight now. And to answer ...You voiced many of my own thoughts. And to answer your question: it's darn hard to get your name out when someone can't go into a bookstore and see your books on the shelves. Darn hard.

(btw, my e-books are $2.50 for the short story anthologies and $4.99 for the novel. At an 85% royalty rate, I still come out ahead at these low prices.)Susan Helene Gottfriedhttp://westofmars.com/blognoreply@blogger.com
